When i try to print a document with pictures it always reverts to the photo paper tray but i want it printed on ordinary A4 paper. When i go into tools and preferences and select the main paper tray it still tries to use the photo paper tray. I’ve also tried the option for ‘prompt for tray’ but no prompt appears and it still reverts to the photo tray. How do i stop this happening.

Good Day. Thank you for posting your query in the HP community. I read the post regarding issues with selecting the correct paper tray for printing photos on A4 size paper. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description and spectacular troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:
- Which app is being used for printing? Is it Apple AirPrint or HP smart App?
- Has it worked before correctly?
For now, try these steps:
- Make sure to update the iOS device to its latest software updates.
- Then ensure that you uninstall HP smart app if it is installed on the machine and reinstall the latest version of HP Smart App for iOS.
- Then from this link: https://hp.care/2iAt1oD (HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Android, Apple iOS) check all the options relating to iOS and this should do the trick for you if the printing has worked on A4 paper from the iOS device before.
Other things to try.
Leave the printer’s photo tray empty.
Fill the Main tray with A4 size photo paper.
Also try updating the printer’s firmware from a Windows or Mac computer by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2rHKwDD
There is step by step instructions listed in this guide.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
