HP Envy 5532e
macOS 10.15 Catalina

HP Envy 5532e is printing much darker photo prints than show on my iMac screen.

FPU No. A9J40 - 64002

I have run the software and drivers reinstall to get the latest updates.

I have contacted apple support and run through diagnostics with them and they say that is all fine.

Any suggestions please.

PS. As I have Catalina on my iMac I wonder if a 64 bit driver is required. Just a thought.

Hi @Woffy

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the  "Print quality" issue.

To better assist you -

1) Does the copy come out the same way?

2) What's the application you are trying to print from? Have you tried printing from a different application or device?

While you respond to that, let's print a Print Quality Diagnostic page -

  1. Load plain white paper in the paper tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, touch the Settings icon , and then touch Tools.

    The Tools Menu displays.

  3. Touch Print Quality Report.

Post the Print Quality Diagnostic page here so we can help you further.

You may also refer to this document with steps to fix " Print Quality Issues" issue applicable for your printer -  Print Quality Issues

Also, set the print quality to draft mode, Click Media & Quality, and then move the Quality slider to the desired setting.

You can refer to Print Settings Guide (Mac)

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Jay thanks for replying.

1. If you mean do they come out the same way as on my screen yes they do.

2. I have tried printing direct from the Mac, and my iPhone.

I have also used Pixelmator software and I have manipulated photos on Pixelmator to try and improve them although I am a             novice at this.

I have also used matt & glossy photo paper and different quality plain papers.

Also I have gone from photo paper settings, Best plain paper settings and draft settings.

3. This is the diagnostic report.

Hi Jay, Contrary to what i said earlier, I have just done a 2 photo print on one page using the Photos on mac.

This did reverse the photos ie the left one on screen came out as the right one on the print.

Hi Woffy,

Is the quality of the pictures better?

Hi Jay,

I was part way through the check list you gave me when unfortunately my printer broke (a plastic part carrying the carriage drive belt broke off).

I was about half way through the list and it had not cured it.

This sadly means I cannot get to the bottom of my problem as I am going to have to buy a new printer.

Do you have any suggestions ???

Many thanks for your efforts

As this is a hardware issue, I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer.
