Suddenly, and without reason, the printer slams the photo tray out and in ready to print, but then says "The photo tray is blocked"
So following all the obvious idiot-proof suggestions of trying alignments and all those things some poltergeist must have up and caused to suddenly misalign, there is no joy. And no joy for many people on blogs either. Seems HP is useless to solve this. One tech said "its a hardware issue, and you'll need to get your printer serviced". Well, hello, all that gas, and travel time, and finding a repair place, and paying silly dollars! I think not, a new printer is the obvious and cheapest answer. Welcome to a throwaway society!!

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Are you facing this after an update?
Did you check for any jam in the printer?
I suggest you do a Hard Reset
(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Then, please follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP ENVY, Officejet Printers - 'Photo Tray Problem' Error Displays - Click here
