Photosmart 5520 -Startup ink alert then Carriage Jam
My printer when switching on shows the message "Startup Ink Alert". I then click OK it then states "Carriage Jam". I have done the procedures in the video "Clear carriage jam". I have checked all areas for a paper jam and have slid the ink cartridges back and forward. I saw in the video how to push the 2 towers back but my printer did not have the towers in the way. The HP video I watched was 16 minutes and I have followed all the instructions, but still have problems. I can't access the main menu to do a print report as I can't get passed the error messages.
Thank you

@dbell2 Welcome to HP Forums!
I have a few steps to help you out:
Step one: Turn the printer off and on again
-
Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
-
Wait 60 seconds.
-
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
NOTE:
The printer might go through a warm-up period that can last up to one minute. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before continuing.
Step two: Print a Printer Status Report
Follow these steps to print a test page to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
The following video demonstrates how to print a Printer Status Report.
Printing a Test Page - HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One Printer
Learn how to print a test page from the HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One Printer.
If you have trouble viewing the video or to view the video in a different size, click here to play the video on YouTube.
-
Load plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper in the tray, if it is not already loaded.
-
On the product control panel, touch the Settings icon (
), and then touch Tools.
-
Touch Printer Status Report. The product prints the test page.

If these steps resolved the issue and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
-
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
-
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

I have gone through these steps already because I watched the carriage jam on another community post. But I can’t access the main menu to do the printer status report because the printer is stuck in the cycle of needing me to clear a carriage jam then when I open all of the places that paper could be stuck (even though it was already cleared and now empty) then it says ink startup alert and is stuck in this cycle. I can’t reset it to get back to the main menu even when using the reset method you mentioned. Hopefully there’s another option.
Thank you.

@dbell2 the reset should have done the trick since that didn't work, it confirms a hardware malfunction, to help you further I'd like to know if your device is under warranty? If not, please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from, here's how private messages work: Click here for details.
