I recently purchased a used HP LaserJet MFP M140w printer. It was working fine at first, but now I'm facing an issue where the printer displays an error message: "Printer cannot print."
The printer connects to Wi-Fi and is installed in the HP Smart App, but the problem persists. There's an exclamation point light blinking continuously on the printer.
I tried reaching out to the seller, but they aren't responding, and I'm unsure how to resolve the issue. I registered the printer today, hoping it might help.
Printer details:
- Model: HP LaserJet MFP M140w
- Formatter No: DT57X3A
- Serial Number: [personal info removed]

Hi @Noumank,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP LaserJet MFP M140w printer displays the "Printer cannot print" error and has a continuously blinking exclamation point light, it indicates a problem that prevents the printer from processing print jobs. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check Printer Status and Connections:
Verify Power and Connections:
- Ensure that the printer is properly connected to a power source and turned on.
- Confirm that all cables are securely connected if using USB, or that the printer is correctly connected to your Wi-Fi network if using wireless.
Check the Printer’s Display:
- Look at the printer’s control panel for any specific error messages or prompts that might indicate the issue.
2. Check for Error Messages and Lights:
Consult the Printer Manual:
- Refer to the printer’s manual for information on what the blinking exclamation point light signifies. This will help you understand the nature of the error.
Reset the Printer:
- Power off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and the printer.
- Wait for 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back in and power on the printer.
3. Verify and Reinstall Printer Software:
Update or Reinstall HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app on your device.
- Ensure that the app is updated to the latest version.
- If necessary, uninstall and reinstall the app.
Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- Go to the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for the HP LaserJet MFP M140w.
- Install the drivers and follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
