Hi Folks,

I am experiencing an issue when printing to my Laserjet Pro MFP M283fdw. The first page prints OK and about 2/3 of the second page when the printer displays an error message with an exclamation warning "Print Failure. If error repeats turn off and then on. Press {OK} to continue", the remaining pages are blank.
This occurs with print jobs sent across the network or when printing reports via the printer menu.

I have power cycled without success and also defaulted the printer and setup from default.
Seems to be a printer issue as I also experienced an issue when copying but came up with different error message "Engine Error press OK to continue" then followed by original error after pressing OK.

Any ideas?

Check Toner Cartridges

Sometimes, issues with the toner cartridges can cause errors.

  1. Remove the toner cartridges and inspect them for damage or leaks.
  2. Reinstall the toner cartridges.
  3. Ensure they are properly seated.

Network and Connectivity Issues

Since the issue occurs over the network, ensure that your network connection is stable.

  1. Check your network cables and connections.
  2. Restart your router.
  3. If possible, try connecting the printer directly to your computer via USB to see if the issue persists.

Print Quality and Diagnostic Reports

Run print quality and diagnostic reports from the printer’s menu. This can sometimes provide additional insights into what might be wrong.

  1. Go to the printer’s control panel.
  2. Navigate to the "Reports" or "Diagnostics" menu.
  3. Print a test page or diagnostic report.

Following these steps should help you diagnose and possibly resolve the printing issues with your LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Spog99,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issues you are describing with your LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw printer, such as "Print Failure" and "Engine Error" messages, suggest a potential hardware problem. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue.

Check for Firmware Updates

Make sure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes, firmware updates can fix bugs and improve printer performance.

  1. Go to the HP support website.
  2. Search for your printer model: LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw.
  3. Download and install the latest firmware for your printer.

Perform a Hard Reset

Performing a hard reset might resolve the issue. Here's how:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and then to the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer.

Check for Paper Jams

Paper jams can cause various errors. Make sure there are no paper jams in the printer.

  1. Open all access doors and trays.
  2. Carefully remove any jammed paper.
  3. Ensure all paper paths are clear.

Inspect and Clean the Printer

Dust and debris can cause printing issues. Clean the printer, especially around the rollers and the paper feed area.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Use a lint-free cloth to gently clean the rollers and any visible areas.
  3. If you have access to printer cleaning sheets, use them according to the HP instructions.

Hi Alden4,

Thank you for your advice and suggestions. I have thoroughly inspected and cleaned the printer, and followed all you troubleshooting tips.

Unfortunately it has not cleared the problem.

I can still connect to the printer using HP Smart but as soon as I try to print anything (or copy anything) it throws up the error message "Exclamation Warning - Print Failure, If error repeats turn off and then on". Even printing a report from the printer menu generates the error.

Is it possible to downgrade the firmware as I think this occurred after it was last updated. Although I cannot be sure. Please send me process to downgrade firmware?

Thanks for you help.

Since my last email, I have further inspected the printer and found tray 1 feed assembly was misaligned. I have reseated the assembly and all now seems to be working OK.

Thanks for you help and advice.

Best Regards

It sounds like your printer might have a hardware issue, especially since power cycling and resetting didn't help. You might need to contact HP support for further assistance. Just like checking your SASSA status Check online requires following specific steps, troubleshooting this printer issue may need professional guidance.

Thanks for your reply. It was indeed a hardware issue which I fixed by reseating the tray 1 feed assembly
