I would like to print some photos without using PhotoBlack.  I have tried the advanced button in the printer dialogue, changing "Print in greyscale" to "Black ink only", which produces a b&w print - not what I want. I want to print some photos (Intent - Pictures) on photo paper, using colour, plus regular black. Is this possible?

The black ink is pigmented and not compatible with photo media.  The photo cartridge use dye based black ink which is used for printing photos.

You could perhaps select plain paper in the driver settings, but printing on Photo paper with plain paper settings will give poor results.   The pigmented black ink will not dry properly on photo paper.

Is there some reason you do not want to use the proper photo cartridge?

Thanks for the explanation.  I print a lot and was hoping to save a bit of money - photo black is costly.
