Hi team,
I use an Avery Label template for J8173 avery labels. When I print the document on a sheet of A4 paper it prints correctly. When I insert the sheet of labels into the printer, it often, (BUT not always), prints between 1/3rd and 1/2 way down the sheet of labels. The print job does not start in the same place. Sometimes the print job works correctly, (with a sheet of labels). I can always correctly print the document correctly with plain A4 paper. I have saved it as a Word doc and printed from Word, I have tried it as a pdf, the results are the same. Sometimes it works correctly but quite often it doesn't and it wastes a large number of my sheets of A4 paper, my ink and also my sheets of labels which are obviously a lot more expensive. Attached are 4 pages I have just printed, The 3 on the LHS are pages of labels showing how random the start and finish of each page is, and the page on the RHS, (the bottom sheet), is what I am trying to produce.
Occasionally it will cycle through a whole sheet of labels without printing anything, and then start midway through the next sheet.Print examples

Hi @Qtr8r8,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
The issue you're experiencing with inconsistent printing on label sheets is likely caused by a combination of printer settings, label sheet handling, and media compatibility. Below are some troubleshooting steps to address the problem:
1. Verify Printer Settings
Ensure that the printer settings match the label specifications:
- Paper Type: Set the paper type to Labels or Thicker Paper in the printer settings.
- In the print dialog (from Word or PDF viewer), go to Printer Properties or Preferences and select the appropriate media type.
- Paper Size: Confirm that the paper size is set to A4.
2. Ensure Proper Label Alignment
- Label Sheets: Use only high-quality label sheets (e.g., Avery J8173) compatible with your printer.
- Loading Tray:
- Align the label sheets properly in the paper tray.
- Avoid overloading the tray, and ensure the labels are flat and not bent or curled.
- Adjust the paper guides snugly to the edges of the label sheets.
3. Use Manual Feed (if applicable)
Some printers perform better with specialty media (like labels) when fed manually:
- If your printer has a manual feed slot, try using it instead of the standard paper tray.
4. Check for Slippage or Feed Issues
If the labels are misaligned, the issue could stem from the printer rollers or sensors:
- Clean the Rollers: Dust or debris on the rollers can cause inconsistent feeding. Follow these steps:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the printer to access the rollers.
- Gently clean the rollers using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Check Labels: Ensure the adhesive is not exposed, as it could stick to the rollers and cause slippage.
5. Test Different Applications
To rule out software issues:
- Test the same label template with different software (e.g., Microsoft Word, PDF, or Avery's Design & Print software).
- Download and use the Avery Design & Print software (if you haven’t already) for optimal template compatibility.
6. Update Printer Firmware
- Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware.
7. Try Printing a Single Label Sheet
- Print one sheet of labels at a time to avoid feed inconsistencies.
- If this resolves the issue, it may indicate that the printer struggles with handling multiple label sheets in the tray.
8. Reset the Printer
- Refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults and let me know if that resolves the issue
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day
