I've had an HP Officejet Pro 8500a for many years and love it. Recently I've had difficulty with the black ink not printing even though there is plenty of ink. A few months ago I intalled new ink.
It quit printing black so I had it clean the printheads and that actually made the problem worse and it stopped printing some of the other colours. I've gotten a kit to clean the where the ink connects to the printer and run special cleaning paper through the printer. Run diagnostics page, tried to callibrate and align. The diagnostic page was streaky so I ran it again after the cleaning and it was better, but the black was still streaky. Alignment failed again and now it's not printing anything.
it's not telling me I need to replace the printheads but what would you suggest? It's no longer under warranty and I hate to pay that much for new printheads if that's not the problem.
I had a similar issue with this a few months ago and finally after deep cleaning a number of times (probably at least 5 or 6) it finally started working again, but that uses so much ink. Please help.

Good Day. Thank you for posting your query in the HP community. I read the post regarding issues with not able to print in black. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description and spectacular troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:
- Did this first happen after a recent power outage or surge?
For now, let me keep you posted about a few things here. The printer’s hardware seems to be faulty. I am being candid about it.
For now, try these steps:
- Please perform all the prescribed steps from this link: https://hp.care/2DDbO3E (Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One Printer Series) if you’ve not done it already. Ignore it if it has been done.
If the issue persists, then contact HP phone support to get the printer replaced as it might be faulty. I am being honest about it here by keeping your best interest in mind without beating around the bush.
I am also trying to save you a lot of money here. If you replace the printheads and they don’t work then the printer would require a replacement. The cost of printheads is almost the cost of a printer.
Hence it is suggested to replace the printer.
HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:
- Click on this link – https://hp.care/2moMFSc
- 2) Click on “Continue as guest”.
- 3) Enter the serial of your device.
- 4) Select the country from the drop-down.
- 5) Click on “Show Options”.
Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.
Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response. Please note that I am not overloading you with steps but instead, giving you more information to work with.
We are as eager as you are to get the issue fixed. I request you to perform all these steps till the issue is fixed.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
