HP 7640 Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP 7640 Envy Printer..... the printer was working, but after I recently downloaded latest Windows 10 upgrades, I've been getting an error code HP209E31 and not able to activate a print from my lap top.  I went to the HP site and downloaded the Printer Doctor fix.  When the program scanned my document, some errors were discovered and I was able to print a test page.  When I tried to print document, I got the same error printing and looked at the code on the screen.  I  powered off both my printer and laptop, hoping that whatever problem was there, only needed both devices to be resynchronized.  Unfortunately, after doing that, I got the same error message.  Any suggestions?  One other point, we recently had power outage, but the printer is plugged into a surge protector....  Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated...

@Hojo10, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.

Now, try making a standalone copy and check if the error persists. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware issue or a driver issue.

Let me know how this goes.
