I changed to a new HP cartridge and immediately got the error message "The indicated cartridges are not communicating properly with the printer". I've unplugged, turned off, re-inserted the cartridge, chatted with AI, but nothing helps. Oddly, the replaced cartridge "prints" fine, except that it's out of ink so nothing shows up on the page. Does this sound as if it's the cartridge itself? Came in the mail directly from HP so I know it's not a knock-off.
Need advise.

Hi @PineConeKathel,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding cartridge issues for HP ENVY Photo 7858 All-in-One Printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Check for Cartridge Compatibility:
- Ensure the new HP cartridge is compatible with the HP ENVY Photo 7858 All-in-One Printer. Refer to the printer's manual or the HP website for the correct cartridge model.
Inspect Cartridge and Printer Contacts:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the cartridge access door and remove the new cartridge.
- Inspect the copper-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge. Ensure they are clean and free from debris.
- Similarly, inspect the electrical contacts inside the printer. Gently clean them with a lint-free cloth and distilled water, if necessary.
Reset the Printer:
- After cleaning, reinstall the cartridge.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Plug in the printer and turn it on.
- Perform a full reset by unplugging the printer from power, waiting 60 seconds, and plugging it back in.
Reinstall Printer Software and Drivers:
- Sometimes reinstalling the printer software and drivers can resolve communication issues. Download and install the latest software and drivers from the HP Support website.
Update Firmware:
Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.
Try Another Cartridge:
- If possible, try using another genuine HP cartridge (e.g., a new replacement cartridge) to see if the error persists. This test can help identify if the issue is with the specific cartridge or the printer itself.
I hope this helps.
