After replacing empty ink cartridges, I got a "Printer Failure - There is a problem with the printer or ink system"...
I have tried the various reset or printhead fix steps (except printhead replacement) I found online and in this forum, but without success. My last hope is that a reset procedure sent via private messages to other support seekers for the seemingly same issue may do the trick...

Hi @ChrisL8,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the "Printer Failure - There is a problem with the printer or ink system" error on the HP Officejet Pro 8610 can be quite frustrating, especially after trying multiple troubleshooting steps. Here’s a comprehensive approach to help resolve the issue:\
Steps to Resolve the Printer Failure Error:
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn on the printer.
- While the printer is on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
- Turn on the printer.
Check the Cartridges and Printhead:
- Remove all the ink cartridges from the printer.
- Inspect the cartridges for any damage or leaks.
- Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth.
- Open the printhead latch and remove the printhead.
- Clean the printhead contacts and ensure there’s no ink buildup.
- Reinstall the printhead and cartridges, ensuring they are securely in place.
Firmware Update: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Make sure the printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can fix bugs and errors related to the ink system.
- Download the latest firmware from the HP Support website.
Printhead Replacement:
- If you’ve tried all other steps and the error persists, the printhead may need to be replaced. This is a common issue with the HP Officejet Pro 8610 series when the printhead has malfunctioned or is clogged beyond repair.

I hope this helps.
