@PENSPackMom, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Printer Failure Error!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The Printer Failure Error can occur due to several issues even if the cartridges are intact and restarting your printer didn't resolve the issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps specific for HP Designjet 5000 and 5500 Series Printers:

Turn Off the Printer:

  • Use the main power switch located on the back of the printer and turn it off.
  • Wait for 10-15 seconds, then turn the power switch on.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure the current firmware version is A.02.07 or higher.
  • To check firmware version:
    • Scroll to the Printer setup menu (icon on the upper right corner of the display) and press Enter.
    • Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Utilities and press Enter.
    • Scroll to Statistics and press Enter.
    • The current firmware version will be displayed at 'Code rev ='.
  • If the firmware version is lower than A.02.07, upgrade it.

Reinstall Ink Cartridges:

  • Remove and re-install all ink cartridges.
  • Verify printer functionality.

Replace Affected Ink Cartridges:

  • If you identify which ink cartridge might be causing the issue, replace the affected cartridge(s).
  • Verify printer functionality again.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
