HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

Hi, I have an HP Officejet Pro 8610 printer, bought in September 2014, so it is approximately 8 years, 6 months old.

However, it is only used every few months, to scan 1 or 2 documents, and occasionally printing a few pages.  As an indication the ink cartridges last 3 years (but have been replaced recently).

It was working perfectly until last month, when upon plugging it in, then turning it on, I now get the message:

  • Printer Failure: There is a problem with the printer or ink system.  Turn printer off, then on.  If problem persists, contact HP.

If I click on the highlighted '?' mark, I get:

  • Printer Failure:  Solution 2: Contact HP support.  Write down the error code provided in the message, and then contact HP support.  Go to:  www.hp.com/support.

(just to confirm, no error code is displayed, unless you count the words 'Printer Failure' as an error code)

The printer is usually unplugged, as it is seldom used, but I have repeatedly unplugged it, as well as turning it off, then on.

I know the printer is old, and long out of warranty, but I find it strange that it was working perfectly, then suddenly stopped working.

Most annoyingly these 'Printer Failure' messages mean I cannot even scan any documents to a USB drive, although I accept the scanner may be broken!

So, my question is should I simply dispose of this 8 year old printer?

Realistically, has it come to the end of it's life?
