HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g

I keep getting a Printer Failure message that says, "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP."

I have turned it off and on. I have followed all of the troubleshooting suggestions from the virtual assistant like taking the cartridges out and then putting back in. Nothing works. I can't do anything...help!

Hi @SLarsen1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. When an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus displays the message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" and basic power cycling and cartridge reseating have already been completed, the issue may be related to the ink delivery system, printhead, or an internal printer state that needs to be reset.

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  4. Press and hold the printer's Power button for 15 seconds while it is unplugged.
  5. Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and then to the printer.
  6. Turn the printer on and check whether the error returns.

If the message continues:

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Remove all ink cartridges.
  3. Inspect each cartridge for leaks, damage, excessive ink buildup, or missing vent tabs.
  4. Reinstall the cartridges one at a time, ensuring each clicks firmly into place.
  5. Close the access door and check for any change in the error message.

If the printer allows access to the menu:

  1. Touch Setup.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Run Clean Printhead.
  4. If available, run Align Printer afterward.

If the printer remains locked with the same error and does not allow access to menus, the printhead assembly may require attention:

  1. Open the cartridge access area.
  2. Remove all cartridges.
  3. Lift the printhead latch and carefully remove the printhead.
  4. Check for dried ink, debris, or damaged electrical contacts.
  5. Reinstall the printhead securely and reinstall the cartridges.

If the error appears immediately during startup, before printing or copying, and persists after the above steps, it can indicate that the printer is unable to initialize the ink system correctly. In that case, please let us know:

  • Are all cartridges genuine HP cartridges?
  • Does the error appear immediately after powering on, or only when attempting to print?
  • Can you access the printer's Home screen and menus?
  • Have any cartridges or the printhead been replaced recently?

This information will help us identify the most appropriate next steps for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
