HP ENVY Photo 7858 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Whenever I try to print double-sided the printer says it can't print double-sided when the paper choice is postcard. I have never changed settings on anything anywhere from 8x11. I can't find anywhere to change it. The printer is set to 8x11. My Mac is set to 8x11. My MS Word is set to 8x11. Why gives?

Hi @brooklynbl,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY Photo 7858 printer can't print double-sided because the paper type is set. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Check Printer Settings:

  • Make sure the paper size settings on your printer itself are set correctly. You can usually do this through the printer's control panel or menu. Ensure it is set to 8.5x11 inches (Letter size).

Verify Paper Type Settings:

  • Double-check that the paper type selected on the printer matches the actual paper loaded in the tray. If the printer thinks postcard paper is loaded, it may restrict certain print options like double-sided printing. Ensure the printer is set to use plain paper or the correct paper type for Letter size.

Reset Printing System on MacOS:

  • Sometimes, resetting the printing system on your Mac can help clear any erroneous settings. Here's how you can do it:
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Right-click (or Ctrl-click) on the list of printers on the left and choose Reset printing system.
    • This will remove all printers and scanners from your list. You'll need to re-add your printer afterward.

Reinstall Printer Driver:

  • Download and reinstall the latest printer driver and software from the HP website. Sometimes, updating or reinstalling the driver can resolve communication issues between the printer and your Mac, including incorrect settings being recognized.

Check Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Firmware updates can sometimes fix bugs or issues related to print settings and functionality.

Print Settings in Applications:

  • When printing from applications like MS Word, ensure that the print settings are configured correctly. Set the paper size to 8.5x11 inches (Letter) and ensure the application isn't overriding the printer settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
