HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hey folks,

I got a problem with my Printer HP OfficeJet Pro 8720:

Since a few weeks the printer is only printing black & white, no color.

This happens when:

- printing from computer via USB

- copying documents with the printer

- printing status sheets from the printer (e.g. ink status)

- printing test sites from printer

So it seems that is not a problem with the computer settings but with the printer settings/driver itself.

Cartridges are all almost full.

I updated the drivers to the latest version, no changes.

Any usggestiosn what the problem might be and if there are any possible solutions?

Thanks in advance for your support.

Best Regards

Peter

Hi @PeterLz2386,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer is only printing in black and white, there could be a few reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Check Printer Settings: Make sure that the printer settings on your computer are not set to print in black and white only. Sometimes, the default setting might have been changed accidentally. To check this:

  • Open the print dialog box when you're about to print something.
  • Look for an option that says "Color" or "Black and White". Make sure it's set to "Color" if you want to print in color.

Ink Levels: Check the ink levels in your printer to ensure that the color cartridges have enough ink. If any of the color cartridges are low or empty, the printer might default to black-and-white printing. Replace or refill the cartridges if necessary.

Printer Driver: Outdated or corrupt printer drivers can sometimes lead to printing issues. Try updating the printer drivers to the latest version from the official HP website.

Printer Settings on the Device: Sometimes, printer settings on the physical device itself can affect color printing. To check these settings:

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the settings menu.
  • Look for an option related to color settings or printing preferences.
  • Ensure that color printing is enabled.

Print Quality Settings: Certain print quality settings might be set to black and white for specific documents. Make sure that the print quality settings are appropriate for color printing.

Test Page: Print a test page directly from the printer to determine if the issue is with the printer itself or the connection with the computer. If the test page prints in color, the issue might be related to your computer or software settings.

Check for Software Updates: Ensure that your operating system and any printing-related software are up to date. Sometimes, updates can resolve compatibility issues that might be causing the problem.

Check for Color Profile: Some applications and documents use color profiles that might affect printing. Check the color profile settings in your document and software to ensure they are not causing the issue.

Reset Printer Settings: If none of the above steps work, you might consider resetting the printer settings to their default values. Refer to the printer's manual or HP's support resources for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

HI @alden4,

thanks for your support.

I'm not sure if you have read my post completely. Most of the things you proposed were already checked:

all settings on the computer checked => still black and white

all setting on the printer itself checked => still black and white

test page printed for printer itself => still black and white

software update: updated to latest software => still black and white

ink levels: all above half

I also reseted the printer to default values (i didn't mentioned that in my previous post, sorry) => still black and white

So all of your porposals have already been done and no changes at all.

An other suggestions what I could try?

Thanks in advance

Peter
