Initially printer head clogged unable to print with magenta despite several printer head cleaning commands.

Eventually pulled printer head out of printer and cleaned manually. Can now see magenta unclogged, however upon reinstallation I get a printer head error for both tricolor and black. Have wiped contacts..
Interestingly black error only shows when tricolor head installed.  I have a hp smart tank 7005

Hi @cyoung0221

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the printhead issue on your HP Smart Tank 7005. Based on the details provided, the fact that the printer worked after manual cleaning but now reports printhead errors for both printheads, and that the black printhead error appears only when the tri-color printhead is installed, suggests the printer is detecting an electrical or contact-related issue rather than a simple ink clog.

Please try the following:

  1. Turn the printer on and keep it powered on.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait about 60 seconds, then reconnect the power directly to a wall outlet and turn the printer on.

Next, reseat the printheads carefully:

  1. Open the printhead access door.
  2. Remove both the black and tri-color printheads.
  3. Inspect the copper-colored electrical contacts on both printheads and inside the carriage for:
    • Ink residue
    • Moisture from cleaning
    • Bent or damaged contact pins
  4. Allow all contacts to air dry completely if they were recently cleaned.
  5. Reinstall the black printhead first, then the tri-color printhead, ensuring each clicks firmly into place.
  6. Close the access door and check whether the error changes.

If the printer still reports a printhead error:

  • Test with each printhead individually, if the printer allows initialization.
  • Note whether the error consistently follows the tri-color printhead. Since the black printhead error appears only when the tri-color printhead is installed, that may indicate the tri-color printhead or its contact circuit is preventing proper detection of both printheads.

Also check that:

  • The protective tape was not accidentally left on any printhead contacts.
  • No cleaning material fibers are stuck on the printhead contacts.
  • The printhead latch is fully locked.

If possible, let us know the exact printhead error message shown on the printer display (for example, "Printhead Missing," "Printhead Problem," or a specific error code), as that will help determine whether the issue is related to printhead detection, carriage contacts, or printhead health.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
