The printer works for a day or two and that the brain misfires and I get error messages.
I have set and reset this thing up many times. I have called for support. It will work great for a bit and than I get error messages. Today I see that everything looks good on the app. Printer is connected and ready. I try to print and nothing. I do not even get error messages. I cleared the Q and unplugged the printer and tried again. No go!
My internet is connected working. I believe there is an issue with this printer and I am ready to get rid of it!
I love the ink tanks but I am spending too many hours troubleshooting. I have never had this many problems with
ANY printer! HELP!

Hi @123Sunny, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
First off, I totally get your frustration—it's like your HP Smart Tank 5101 is playing hard to get! But don't worry, we're here to turn that frown upside down and get you back to printing in no time.
Let's tackle this together! Here are a few steps you might want to try:
Reset the Printer and Network
Power Reset
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from power, and wait for 5 minutes.
- Restart your router by unplugging it for 2 minutes, then plug it back in.
- Turn on the printer and try again.
Restore Network Settings on Printer
- On the printer, press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons for 5 seconds until the power light blinks.
- Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi using the HP Smart app.
Reinstall the Printer on Your Devices
Remove Printer from Computer
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers (Windows) or System Preferences > Printers & Scanners (Mac).
- Right-click and Remove the printer.
Reinstall HP Smart App & Printer Drivers
- Uninstall the HP Smart app and printer drivers.
- Restart your computer.
- Download and reinstall the latest drivers from HP’s website.

Check for Printer Firmware Updates
- Open the HP Smart app, go to Printer Settings, and check for firmware updates.
Change Printer Connection Type (Optional)
- If using Wi-Fi, try connecting the printer via USB to see if it works.
- If USB works but Wi-Fi doesn’t, your network might be the problem.
Set a Static IP Address (For Wi-Fi Issues)
If the printer keeps disconnecting or fails to respond:
Find Printer IP Address
- Print a Network Configuration Page (press and hold the Wi-Fi and Info buttons).
- Look for IPv4 Address (e.g., 192.168.1.100).
Manually Set IP Address in Router
- Log into your router settings.
- Reserve the printer's IP address under DHCP settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
Happy printing (or troubleshooting)! 😊
