HP LaserJet MFP M140we Printer

This printer one day stopped working. I have tried troubleshooting from iPhone and Windows 11 machines.

Error 11 flashes on the printer and sometimes Error 2. The HP Smart App says it is an "Incompatible Toner" issue but that was replaced by a "Cartridge or Account Issue" message.

I purchased a new toner from HP that is most definitely compatible but still the error persists.

The error message is far from clear and my computer is out of warranty so would have to pay $20 for support. Seems like some bad software to me and has been an overall frustrating experience.

Hi @BadPrinter99,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand how frustrating this is, especially since you’ve already purchased a new toner. The Err 11 (and sometimes Err 2) on the HP Laser MFP 140we usually points to a toner authentication or account issue rather than the cartridge itself.

Power Reset

Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, and wait 1 minute.

Reconnect and power it back on.

Check Cartridge Seating

Remove the toner cartridge.

Gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth.

Reinstall firmly until it clicks in place.

Confirm Genuine HP Toner

This model requires original HP 117A toner (not refilled/third-party).

Open the HP Smart App → Supplies → Verify Cartridge to confirm it shows as genuine.

Account Connection

The “we” model (MFP 140we) relies on being linked to an HP account and HP Smart app.

Sign in to HP Smart on your phone or PC.

Make sure the printer is linked to your HP account and Wi-Fi is connected.

Firmware Update

In HP Smart → Printer SettingsAdvanced SettingsToolsPrinter Updates.

Install any available updates, as they can resolve cartridge recognition errors.

Test Print

After linking and updating, try printing a test page from HP Smart.

I hope this helps.

Hello,

Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately following the steps you provided did not solve the issue. I had already tried them multiple times before but doing it again in sequence did nothing. I believe I have the right toner cartridge. The model number matches the only available for this printer linked through HPs website and was purchased through a trusted retailer. (https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-141a-black-original-laserjet-toner-cartridge?Offer_id=MAS-17577...)

The toner clicks in perfectly.

At one point in the troubleshooting I did factory reset the printer and used a different HP account to manage but this was a while ago. So I don't think it is an account issue.

I would say the error message "Cartridge or Account issue" is very vague and unhelpful. This really seems like a software issue not a hardware issue and right now this printer is essentially a brick. In the interest of my time I can only find a different printer to deal with. Thank you for the service but you are supporting a seemingly low quality product.
