Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer will not start and has a continuously rotating circle with the statement Verifying.

The power button has no effect.

I have tried removing the power cable, waiting and plugging directly into a socket but it does not change.
I think I declined a firmware update recently because I was busy

Hi @MDW01,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer getting stuck on "Verifying" can be frustrating, especially since it seems to be unresponsive to the usual troubleshooting steps like power cycling. Declining a firmware update can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior, including issues with startup, as firmware updates often contain important fixes and improvements. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Hard Reset:

  • You've mentioned removing the power cable, but let's try a more specific approach to ensure a complete reset:
    • Disconnect the printer from the power source.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds. This waiting period is crucial as it clears the printer's internal memory and can help resolve stuck processes.
    • Press and hold the printer's power button for about 30 seconds while it's still unplugged. This step helps discharge any remaining power in the printer.
    • Reconnect the printer directly to a wall outlet, avoiding any surge protectors or extension cords, as these can sometimes cause electrical issues.
    • Turn on the printer and see if the issue persists.

Update Firmware:

  • Since the problem might have started after declining a firmware update, completing the update could resolve the issue. However, since your printer is stuck on the "Verifying" screen and likely unresponsive, updating the firmware through the usual method via the printer's control panel isn't an option. Instead, try the following:
    • Visit the HP Customer Support website on a computer.
    • Search for your printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer).
    • Go to the "Software, Drivers and Firmware" section.
    • Download the latest firmware available for your printer.
    • If possible, the website might offer alternative methods to update the firmware, such as using a USB drive. Follow the instructions provided carefully.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
