Having replaced my empty HP ink cartridges with new HP ink cartridges I am now getting a Printer Supply Problem error regarding the magenta and yellow cartridges.  They are new from HP so I know they are fine, and despite following all the recommendations to perform various resets and reseats of the cartridges, nothing seems to work.  My printer is an OfficeJet Pro 8720 and was working completely fine until this issue.

Hello @Pitcher1, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP Officejet Pro 8720.

We appreciate the opportunity to assist you and are glad we could help work toward a resolution. We hope our support has been valuable.

To help us get started on resolving your issue, could you please try a few troubleshooting steps provided below so that I can assist you further?

Step-by-Step

  1. Check cartridge compatibility.
Remove one affected cartridge and verify the cartridge number matches your printer model and the country/region where the printer was purchased. HP notes that some cartridges can physically fit but are not compatible and can trigger communication errors.
  2. If the cartridge number does not match, use the correct cartridges.
Use the cartridges that came with the printer or replace them with cartridges that match your printer model and country/region.
  3. If the cartridge number matches, update the printer firmware.
HP says firmware updates can address cartridge communication errors.
    • From the printer control panel: Tap Menu > Tools > Maintenance > Firmware > Check.
    • From HP Smart app: Open your printer, go to Advanced Settings, then check Printer Update / Printer Updates.
    • From HP website: Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads and install any available Firmware update.
  4. If firmware is already current and the error remains, replace the affected cartridges.
