HP Envy 5540

I have an HP Envy 5540 that's a few years old. The color ink has been empty for a bit but black ink is about 75% full; however the printer has been printing a bit stripey recently. I went to replace the color ink cartridge and noticed that the black ink cartridge had expired (this is probably the first time we've changed out the cartridges). So I decided to go ahead and replace both cartridges.

I put both new HP cartridges in and the printer brought up the a "Single Cartridge Mode" notice on the screen. It printed the alignment page in color. When I checked the ink levels, it said black ink was empty with an X. I then went to try and put the old black ink cartridge back in, and this is where things really went off the rails.

With the old black cartridge in, the printer no longer recognizes either cartridge as being installed and brings up the Cartridges Missing error message and shows both ink levels as empty with an X.

I've tried a hard reboot. I reinstalled both cartridges multiple times. I cleaned the contact points. I've tried both the old and new black cartridge.

The only way I can get the printer to print anything at all at this point is to only install the color cartridge. I would like to be able to install and use a black ink cartridge.

Hi @krrific

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

If you have already performed the steps from the document Error Indicates Faulty Ink Cartridge and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

Hope this helps!
