Hi @mpivanovsky,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP DeskJet 2540 might be having trouble recognizing the new black ink cartridge or there could be an issue with the printer's internal sensors.
Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
- Check Cartridge Installation: Make sure the new black ink cartridge is properly installed. Remove it and reinstall it to ensure it’s seated correctly.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, dirty contacts can cause issues. Gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer using a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Reset the Printer: Try resetting the printer. Turn it off, unplug it from the power source, wait for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Update or Reinstall Printer Software: Make sure you have the latest drivers and software installed for your printer. Sometimes, outdated software can cause issues. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.
- Run HP Print and Scan Doctor: For macOS, you can use HP Smart or HP Print and Scan Doctor if available. This tool can help diagnose and fix common printing issues. HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Check for Paper Jams: Even though the error seems related to the ink cartridge, it’s a good idea to check for any paper jams or obstructions that might be causing the printer to be busy.
- Perform a Hard Reset: If the issue persists, try performing a hard reset. Turn off the printer, disconnect all cables, and then reconnect them after a few minutes. This can sometimes resolve persistent issues.
