Trying to print a document, printer is connected via USB but will not print, the document says it is still looking for the printer.
Printer cannot connect via wifi due to student internet settings, and the hotspot from the printer has not been appearing on my devices, therefore I purchased the USB.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Enabling the wifi-direct option on the printer and using the Airprint driver may resolve this issue. Let us try these steps:
Step 1: Enable Wi-fi Direct
11- Wi-Fi Direct button: Turns on or off Wi-Fi Direct.
Wi-Fi Direct light: Indicates the on or off status of Wi-Fi Direct.
Press buttons 11 and 2 together to print out the Wifi- Direct information page
Confirm the printer is turned on, cartridges are installed, and plain paper is loaded in the main tray.
On the computer, click the wireless icon
, and then click the printer with DIRECT in the name (Example: DIRECT-72-HP Officejet Pro 6970) from the list of available networks.
If prompted for a password, type 12345678. This is the default password to log in.
Open the item you want to print, click File, and then click Print.
Select your printer from the list of available printers, and then click Print.
Reconnect to your local Wi-Fi network after the print job completes.
USB Printer Setup :
Confirm the following requirements and items before you begin:
The printer is turned on and in a ready state.
Obtain a USB cable less than 3 m (9 ft 10 in) in length.
There is an available USB port on your computer: If you connect through a USB hub or docking station, the printer might not receive enough power to properly operate.
1.) Connect the USB cable between the printer and the computer, Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.
3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.
4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.
5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.
6.) Try to print.
Let me know how this goes.
