@GarfieldMom,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Error code 11 on your HP LaserJet MFP M234sdwe printer usually indicates a problem related to toner, Instant Ink verification, or communication with HP’s servers. Since you’re on an Instant Ink plan, the issue might be related to your subscription validation.

Check Instant Ink Connection

  • Make sure your printer is connected to the internet:
    • Print a Network Configuration Report:
      1. Press and hold the Wi-Fi button until the Ready light starts blinking.
      2. The printer will print a network report.
    • Look for Connection Status (It should be “Connected”).
    • If not connected, reconnect to Wi-Fi:
      • Press the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons together for 5 seconds to reset the connection.
      • Use the HP Smart app to reconnect.

Verify Instant Ink Subscription

  • Sign in to your HP Instant Ink account (HP Instant Ink)
  • Check if your subscription is active or if there are any billing issues.

Remove and Reinsert the Toner

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the toner compartment and remove the toner.
  • Check for any packing material or tape.
  • Gently shake the toner and reinsert it securely.
  • Power the printer back on.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 5 minutes.
  4. Plug it back in and turn it on.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to HP Support and download the latest firmware:
    HP Software & Drivers
  • Install the firmware update via USB or HP Smart App.

Factory Reset (If the Issue Persists)

  • Press and hold the Cancel and Wireless buttons together for 20 seconds until the printer resets.
  • Reconnect to your Wi-Fi and re-add the printer to HP Smart.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

This generic response isn't helpful. What happened was a firmware update on March 4th that bricked all of our M234 printers.

Is there some solution how to repair it?

Hey all. Just wanted to update you guys. Arstechnica seemed to have run with my tip and HP acknowledged that they are working on a new firmware fix.

Firmware update bricks HP printers, makes them unable to use HP cartridges - Ars Technica

They revised the firmware on their printer downloads page to a 2024 version, but doesn't work at updating the bricked printers. Also Louis Rossman did a video shout out for us too.

Why, in the name of everything, is the ink cartridge locked behind a SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE? I just ran out of ink, used my replacement cartridge I got months ago, and now I can't fulfill an order for my small business because my SUBSCRIPTION is inactive? The cartridge is fine, it's the SUBSCRIPTION?

THIS is why people don't use your garbage products. This is the angriest I've been as a customer in a long, long, long time. Ink I paid for, printer I paid for, but I can't use it unless I give HP more money. BS.

same problem here, as other have posted too, looks like they just turned our printer into bricks with the latest firmware update. Probably this is the last HP product I buy in my life.
