The error message “Printer in an error status” typically indicates a communication issue between your computer and the printer, or a problem with the printer's internal status. Let's walk through some steps to resolve this:

Power Reset the Printer

This clears temporary errors.

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on.

Check Printer Connection

Make sure the printer is properly connected:

  • USB: Try a different USB port or cable.
  • Wi-Fi: Ensure the printer is connected to the correct network. You can print a Wireless Network Test Report from the printer's control panel.

Set the Printer as Default

Sometimes Windows sends jobs to the wrong printer.

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your HP ENVY 7800 printer > Set as default printer.

Clear Print Queue

A stuck print job can cause errors.

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Double-click your printer > click See what’s printing.
  • Cancel all documents.

Reinstall the Printer Driver

Corrupt drivers can cause communication errors.

  • Uninstall the printer from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
