My printer continually has print jobs stuck in queue.  I have followed all the instructions listed and it works occasionally, but then jobs get stuck again.  I have updated both my HP laptop and the printer, deleted and reinstalled the HP printer app.  What else to do?  Getting very frustrated.  Printer is almost a year old.

True -- "all the instructions" is a lot and might include anything suggested here.

?

Consider the following -- "What if" and "Consider / Try" suggestions

-- Notes --

  • I've skipped explaining the manual Print Queue clear and rebuild procedures based on your comments.  Ask if you need the information for review.
  • There is a known bug in HP Smart that does not cause "stuck jobs" but it can impact how jobs are completed.  If you are still using HP Smart and have not run into the "Offset Bug", great.  If you need or want information for transitioning to the HP App, ask and I will post the information for you.
  • I've skipped checking / adjusting the Tray and Paper settings on the printer and in the job based on your comments.  If you want information on Tray and Paper settings for paper size / type, ask and I will post the information for you.

Printer - Supported Connections

How is the printer connected?

  • Connection and stability can make a difference -- the printer must be recognized and the connection must be stable.
  • Stability is important -- If the job is large (but not too large to complete), it might strain resources.  Make sure the network is not overloaded and that the device submitting the job has the necessary resources to carry the job to completion.
  • Jobs that are too large for the printer's memory, for the network to handle, or for the computer, might fail spectacularly, stop and die suddenly, or get stuck.

- A few Checkpoints --

Standard Wireless

  • The printer will always do better using an assigned / static IP address.
  • The printer supports either 2.4GHz or 5GHz -- if the printer balks on 5GHz, try switching it over to the SSID named network for 2.4GHz.  Stable and a bit slower is always better than faster but flaky.
  • If / After you change or update the printer's network connection type / settings, consider Restarting the computer.

Wi-Fi Direct

  • Wi-Fi Direct is a limited wireless connection method that uses the wireless radio on your printer to connect to your wireless capable device (for example, your Windows 11 computer).
  • Wi-Fi Direct does not support connecting the printer to the Internet.  This means Wi-Fi Direct cannot be used with Instant Ink, HP+ service (separate animal from Instant Ink), or actions that require access to Cloud services.
  • Wi-Fi Direct is "enough" to support using HP Smart (legacy app) or the HP App in supported devices / OS versions.  Some features will be missing.
  • Your printer's user guide explains how to access and use Wi-Fi Direct as does the HP Document on the subject:   HP printer setup (Wi-Fi Direct)

USB Printer Cable connecting Printer to Computer

  • Neither HP Smart (legacy app) nor its replacement the HP App are suitable to a USB only connection.
  • The Full Driver printer software tolerates a USB only environment as does the HP Scan software (part of the full driver).  Some features might be missing.
  • Windows programs, for example, Windows Scan, tolerate a USB only environment.

Notes

  • If your browser security will not allow you to open EWS, try a different browser.
  • It is not mandatory that you use a manual / static IP address.  Doing so can improve stability.
  • If needful and if supported, set the Band Frequency to the frequency you want the printer to use.
  • If you assign a manual / static address on the printer, update your router to reflect the assigned IP address.
  • EWS sections might be locked and require the printer’s PIN number to access.  Find the printer’s default PIN inside the ink cartridge ink cartridge / area, or perhaps on the bottom or back of the printer.  Check your printer’s User Guide first chapter for details – search the document for “ PIN “.
