HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw

I am not sure the option I selected is the best fit. We are having an issue with basically all of our M428s and 30s.  Basically when we try to add a third tray, they will make a loud clanking when it says tray 3 is lifting, sounding like, as one person experiencing the issue described it, a "machine gun" or another lady said it sounded like a car having "rodknock".  To me it almost sounds like gears are hitting on something but I don't know that that is the issue.

We first had the issue when we put a third tray on one of these printers, so we changed the printer, and still had the issue, then we changed the tray and STILL HAD THE ISSUE WITH BOTH COMPNENTS DIFFERENT!   Now we are having the same thing at another location also. Doesn't matter how many different printers or tray3s we try they all do it.  We don't know how to resolve this issue other than just use tray 2. Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi @Clayton32

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw printers and their third trays. The loud clanking noise during tray operation could be indicative of a few potential problems. Here are some possibilities to consider:

Installation Issues: Ensure that the third tray is installed correctly. Sometimes, if the tray is not seated properly, it can cause mechanical interference. Double-check that all components are aligned and secure.

Compatibility: Make sure that the trays you’re using are genuine HP parts and compatible with the M428fdw model. Incompatible or faulty trays can lead to operational issues.

Obstructions: Inspect the inside of the printer and the tray area for any paper jams or foreign objects that could be obstructing the movement of the tray.

Wear and Tear: If multiple printers are experiencing the same issue, it could be a symptom of wear in the mechanism that lifts the tray. Over time, components can wear down and may need lubrication or replacement.

Firmware Updates: Check for any available firmware updates for the printers. Sometimes, software glitches can lead to mechanical issues, and an update may resolve the problem.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
