I already tried the HO Support site without luck. But I did read (on the support site) not to let the printer sit without a cartridge for more than 30 minutes. I let it sit overnight while I went to store to buy new cartriges.

Thank you for being a part of HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
Most of the printer initialization issues can be resolved by simply power resetting the printer. Here is how to do it:
1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector
2) Remove the printhead and ink cartridges from the printer and close the door. Refer to steps 7 from this: https://support.hp.com/au-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-8600-plus-e-all-in-one-printer-series-n911/432... document.
3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer
6) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the printhead and ink cartridges.
Let me know how it goes!
