HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One Printer

Hello!
I put new hp ink cartridges, all 4 of them. And the printer (hp photosmart 5520) is showing "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn off and then turn on the printer. If the problem persists, contact HP"

What should I do? I spent freaking $112 in it? Kinda lost.

@yubrajxjoshi007, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're seeing the error message:
"There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn off and then turn on the printer. If the problem persists, contact HP."
This can be frustrating, especially after installing new cartridges. Let's walk through some steps to resolve this issue.

Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

This helps clear any temporary error states.

Check the Ink Cartridges

  • Make sure you're using genuine HP ink cartridges. Non-HP or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause this error.
  • Remove all cartridges and inspect them for:
    • Protective tape still attached (remove it if present).
    • Ink leakage or damage.
  • Reinsert the cartridges one by one, ensuring each clicks into place.

Clean the Ink Cartridge and Printhead Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Gently remove the cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean:
    • The copper-colored contacts on the cartridges.
    • The corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Let everything dry for 10 minutes, then reinstall the cartridges.

Update Printer Firmware (if accessible)

If the printer becomes responsive:

  • Go to the printer’s control panel > Setup > Product Update > Check for Updates.

Or update via your PC:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
