No matter what I print, the printer will only print half pages. Nothing has changed and I have completely removed the printer and driver and re-installed with no change. I have tried both usb and network connections and they all have the same result.

same - using HP ENVY 6000. Lots of blank and incomplete pages

So I was able to fix the issue. What I did was removed the printer and the driver, uninstalled the useless HP Smart app and restarted the PC. Then I went to install the printer as usual and when it asked for the driver, I clicked the "Windows Update" button to find the correct driver. It found a different driver than what the HP Smart app installed and now my printer is working great.

I solved it eventually - not sure which of the following made the difference:

  • I reinstalled  the printer- and had to select a wrongly-named printer* (Microsoft IPP, or something like that)! The correct printer name was unavailable.
  • I replaced the ink cartridges

*interestingly, the "wrong" printer worked for 5 days, then had couldn't be recognised and then we were able to reinstall the correct one last night. Will wait to se how long until it goes wrong again...
