HP Envy 5530

How do I reset the administrator password that is needed to log into the security settings on the unit's webpage?  The "factory reset" menu option on the printer's display interface panel does NOT reset this!! The WIFI operation works fine for printing but for some reason the scanner options are disabled by default and the printer's own username and password are required to activate this for some reason.  Nothing in the manual or internet gives any guidance about this.

Hello@HPsjunk

Welcome to the HP Forums.

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

It looks like your printer needs to have a reset performed to it.  This will reset the device to a factory state.

I am sending you a private message with the steps to reset the printer. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen. You can try performing a reset on the printer.

If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.

First thanks for the reply.

I received your private message about the reset.  First, let me say that the since the "button" described in that post is only illuminated and audibly responds when one has gone into a menu and it immediately disappears when you leave that menu, 99% of the users getting these instructions will not be able to follow them.  Specifically, from a cold startup this button is NOT illuminated at least on my Envy 5330.  However, if you make the sequence of presses (at the location where that "button" would appear if a menu dialog were active) it will allow one to perform what you refer to as a factory reset.  After re-establishing the wifi setup so that I could actually log into the printer, it STILL asked for the username and password, so the solution you gave DOES NOT actually work.  However, I solved the problem (which I have seen posted at other times in this forum) so to spare other users this extreme aggravation let me explain the issue and the solution to my problem:

For whatever insane reason HP had for ever requiring setting up a secure account to be created and active before the webscan option (from the printer's URL which is accessed simply by entering its IP address), the initial security setup asks one to generate a password and confirm it.  I did that and I used the same obvious password that I always use for something for which there is no conceivable reason why it should EVER NEED to be password protected in the first place.  The problem is that the initial setup NEVER asked me to setup a USERNAME.  Of course, when I actually tried to log in, it asked for BOTH a USERNAME and password.  I tried in vain to come up with the user name, trying my email account to which my HP Ink account is tied, among many others.  I even tried "administrator" and "user" as a default.  Nothing worked.

Finally, I tried just "admin" for the username.  That DID work with the password that I knew all along.  Needless to say, if I had designed the setup interface for anything this badly, I would have been fired ON THE SPOT.   I serious hope this spares others the grief that this extremely poor design caused me.

Hi @HPsjunk,

Thanks for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I understand your printer is asking for an administrator password. Let’s try to fix the issue by following the steps mentioned below:

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Now go to the Security Tab - Administrative Settings.
  • Uncheck the "Control Panel Lock".

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

If you wish to help others looking for the same solution as you've found, mark the post as Accepted Solution.

If you wish to show appreciation for my effort, please click the Thumbs up icon at the bottom of my comment.

And I Hope you have a good day, Ahead.

Thanks for the reply.  However, as I indicated at the end of my last post, I already fixed the problem.  Specifically, HP interface asks you to CREATE a PASSWORD initially and it AUTOMATICALLY defines a USERNAME, which happens to be ADMIN.  Then when you try to login into the printer it asks you for BOTH the PASSWORD and USERNAME (which the user DID NOT create).  So, unless the user can guess the USERNAME default which is ADMIN, you're locked OUT of the printer.

I have seen this exact issue posted on the user forum's several times.  However, the people answering these posts just can't seem to grasp the problem (despite it being perfectly articulated), even though I immediately understood exactly what those posters were asking (and never got the trivial yet all important answer that the USERNAME is defaulted to admin.)  I can only assume those poster eventually gave up and bought a scanner/printer from a competitor.

OH MY GOD @HPsjunk
I've had a problem with my password for AGES and couldn't figure out what it could be or how to reset it... turns out, my password was right all along.. the problem was the username. When you wrote that the username was defaulted as admin, I thought I'd try it.. and it worked. You're a total life savor

I cannot do this because there is no security tab on the website,
