My HP Envy 5540 printer will photocopy and print a test page perfectly but will not print a document - it keeps telling me it is out of paper.  Any ideas please?

Places to check and things to try...

Full Feature Software and Related Updates / Software

If you have not done so, download-save-install the Full Feature Software for your printer.

The Full Feature Software provides access and control for the printing preferences (media, paper size, source (tray))

HP ENVY 5540 series Full Feature Software and Drivers

Firmware

It is likely the printer Firmware is up to date.  If, however, you have never done so, consider updating the firmware.

Always read available information before installing / updating the Firmware.

HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer series Firmware Update

Adobe Reader DC

Although this software is not directly related to paper issues of the type you are seeing, it is important that the software be installed, current, and functional to print documents.

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

  • HINT: Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
  • Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not open / view / print PDF files directly from the software.

Load Media - Check / Retain / Change the paper size in the Printer Control Panel (on the printer)

The User Guide explains how to load the paper.

Be sure to check / change the paper size on the Printer Control Panel (Pages 11-12)

For example:

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Panel

Open Printer Tray, add desired paper type

If there is already paper in the tray, remove the paper from the tray.

Flex (do not "fan") the paper stack and place the paper back into the tray.

Set the paper guides snug but not tight to match the size of the paper.

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

On the printer control panel, Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down list, Select Custom

Set the Preferences

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences >

Tab Printing Shortcuts > Click / Highlight preferred shortcut > Click Apply > Click OK to exit

If the printer software supports the feature, change the settings as desired, then use “Save as” to create a Custom Shortcut.

OR

Windows key + S (search for) Printers and Scanners

Left-Click on (your) Printer > Manage >

Printing Preferences

Select a shortcut and / or set “preferred settings” for paper, source (tray), other settings

Optional (if / as available): Save As > enter a name for your custom shortcut

Click OK to save the preferences

Print and Scan Doctor

This versatile software can find and correct a variety of issues.

Open the Troubleshooting category in the printer's Website Support > Click to download and install the Doctor.

For example, Click on Printer Setup Issues

OR

User Guide provides access to the Print and Scan Doctor (Page 75)

OR

Access the doctor (download and installation) and other Diagnostics here:

Print and Scan Doctor - Diagnostics - Printing

OR here

The Doctor:  HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows

Although not generally related to "out of paper", the following document does include the printer Reset option, which might actually help and only takes a couple of minutes to try.
