Hi @Lamck68,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When your printer screen displays a message like "Scan Unit Open" or "Exit Jam," it typically indicates that there is an issue with the scanner or a paper jam in the printer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check the Scan Unit
- Gently lift the scanner lid to check for any obstructions or foreign objects inside the scanner area.
- Make sure the scanner lid closes securely. If the lid is not closed properly, the printer may display an error message.
- Look for any paper or debris that might be interfering with the scanner’s movement. Remove any obstructions carefully.
2. Check for Paper Jams
- Open the printer’s main paper tray and check for any paper jams or pieces of paper stuck inside.
- Depending on your printer model, there might be a rear access door or panel. Open this to check for any jammed paper.
- Carefully remove any jammed paper from the printer. Be sure to pull out paper in the direction of the paper path to avoid damaging internal components.
- Make sure no small bits of paper or torn pieces are left inside the printer, as these can also cause issues.
3. Inspect and Clear the Scan Path
- If your printer has a document feeder, open it to check for any paper jams or obstructions.
- Look for any visible obstructions or debris around the scanner rollers. Clean them gently if necessary, but avoid using any liquids.
4. Reset the Printer
- Press the power button to turn off the printer. Unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- After restarting, check if the error message has cleared and if the scanner unit and paper paths are functioning correctly.
5. Update Printer Firmware
Sometimes, firmware updates can fix bugs related to paper jams and scanner errors:
- Visit the HP Support website and search for firmware updates for your printer model.
- Follow the instructions to download and install any available firmware updates.
6. Perform a Printer Self-Test
- Access the printer’s control panel and navigate to the diagnostic or self-test options. This can help identify any hardware issues.:
- Print a test page to check if the printer is working correctly after resolving any paper jams or scanner errors.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
