The printer comes up with a message "load paper into input tray, and then press ok". I can't get out of this message.
When I press ok it says "Preparing printer" and then "Printing alignment page" and then nothing happens.
Tried cleaning the rollers etc. Tried disconnecting the power and reconnecting. No difference.
The strange thing is that I can print while it's in this state. When I print I get an "Alignment recommended" message on my computer. If I press "align" nothing happens on the printer, but if I press "do not align" the printer prints what has been sent while still displaying the "Printing alignment page" message.
Would appreciate any help.

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂
As I understand the printer is stuck on printing alignment page,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges on your printer?
Did you run the HP Print and Scan doctor to identify and resolve the issue?
(Click here, if you haven't done it yet)
While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:
Solution one: Use genuine HP cartridges
HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the issue. To check the authenticity of your cartridges, go to hp.com/go/anticounterfeit.
Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.
-
Go to HP SureSupply.
-
If necessary, select your country/region.
Figure : Country/region selector
-
Follow the on-screen instructions to order new supplies or check cartridge compatibility with your printer.
You can also purchase genuine HP cartridges and supplies from other retailers.
Solution two: Allow automatic servicing to complete
Your printer has an automatic servicing routine that can solve many print quality issues. There is nothing you need to do. The print quality should improve a few hours after you experience the issue.
If you cannot wait for the automatic servicing routine to complete, continue with the following troubleshooting steps.
Solution three: Check the paper
Follow these guidelines to make sure that the paper you are using is appropriate for the print job. If paper is not appropriate, reload the printer with an appropriate paper type.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

And Have a great day Ahead!

Thanks Riddle. Unfortunately no change.
I put in new cartridges. The effect is the same. Tried also the scan doctor. It didn't find anything wrong while the printer is stuck on "printing alignment page" for 2 days.
The printer prints whenever I tell the computer not to print the alignment page - but keeps on showing the same message.
What I believe I need is a good old reset. To make the printer forget all and start new. I know how to get to the "secret" menu (pressing home-X--home-home) but what do I do now? I can't do any damage to it because the next step I plan is throwing it out the window...
