HP ENVY Inspire 7255e All-in-One Printer

Printer thinks my 8.5X11 paper is loaded incorrectly. It is not! I’ve turned printer on/off, reloaded paper tray, tried a lot of paper and a little paper.
There are no documents waiting to be printed.

Hi @BetsyGreenville,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP ENVY Inspire 7255e printer is incorrectly detecting that your 8.5x11 paper is loaded incorrectly, despite ensuring the paper is properly placed, here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Check Paper Guides

  • Make sure the paper guides in the tray are snug against the paper but not too tight. If they’re misaligned, the printer may think the paper is loaded incorrectly.

2. Clean the Paper Tray and Rollers

  • Dust or debris in the paper tray or on the paper rollers can cause issues with paper detection. Clean the rollers using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.

3. Check for Obstructions

  • Double-check for any small pieces of paper or debris inside the paper path that could be triggering the error.

4. Ensure Paper is Not Curled or Bent

  • Inspect the paper stack for any curled, bent, or damaged sheets. If necessary, use a new stack of clean, flat paper.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a printer reset by unplugging the printer while it’s on, waiting for about 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in.

6. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Outdated firmware can cause detection errors. You can update it via the HP Smart app or the printer’s built-in menu.

7. Disable 'Paper Size Mismatch'

  • If the issue persists, you can temporarily disable the 'Paper Size Mismatch' detection in the printer settings (this may vary by model):
    1. From the control panel, go to Settings.
    2. Find Preferences or Advanced Settings.
    3. Look for Paper Size Mismatch and turn it off.

8. Reset Paper Settings

  • From your computer, try adjusting the paper size settings for the specific print job:
    • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your printer and choose Printer Properties.
    • In the Paper/Quality tab, ensure the paper size is correctly set to Letter (8.5x11).

9. Try a Factory Reset

  • If nothing else works, you could attempt a factory reset, which will restore all settings to default:
    1. From the printer control panel, go to Setup.
    2. Select Restore Defaults.
    3. Confirm the reset.

If the issue persists after trying all these steps, it may be a hardware issue with the paper sensor.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
