HP Officejet Pro K8600 Printer series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an Officejet Pro 8600 printer with duplexing capability.  It has stopped printing from tray 2.  I select tray 2 and it automatically prints from tray 1.  I have the pull down to select tray 2, however, when I hit "ok" it reverts back to select tray and will not print from tray 2.

Hi @xstitcher,

Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you.  I reviewed the post regarding issues with the printing from tray 2. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description and stupendous diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
  • Did this occur after a Software or Windows update?

For now, try these steps:

  • Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
  • Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
  • Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
  • Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
  • Now check for issue resolution.

  • If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer, if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.

Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2zZRjf7 and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix the issue.

  • Also check if tray 2 is selected correctly from this link: http://hp.care/2zZRjf7 for printer settings. (HP Printers - Print Driver Settings Guide (Windows) look under the option “Paper type, size, and input tray settings”.
  • This should fix the issue as long as there is no hardware issue with the computer.
  • If the problem continues, then perform a hard reset from this link: http://hp.care/2zZRnvn and follow step 1 for a hard reset.

If the problem continues, contact HP phone support for further assistance as the tray could be faulty and the printer may not be detecting it.  Please visit this link: http://hp.care/2moMFSc  and follow the on-screen instructions.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please.

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care now and have a terrific week ahead. 🙂

I thought the problem was fixed, however, it still won't print from Excel.  I tried printing an email and that worked just fine.  Tried to print something from Excel (which is how I normally use tray 2) and it printed on plain paper, not 3 hole drill.  It defaulted back to tray 1.  Any suggestions?
