I have same issue with an HP Color LaserJet Pro M177fw MFP.  Once the printer goes into standby, it will not wake up to print even if I manually wake it up by touching the screen.

Strangely, if I print a test page from the web portal or HP Smart, it prints fine (presumably as this originates from within the printer itself).

The only way I can get printer to print is to unplug, wait 30 secinds and plug back in.

Have tried various reccomended fixes, fixed IP address etc, makes no differece.

Any other ideas as it's just a pain!!??

Thanks.

@Canada_67, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your PC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Assign a static IP address to the printer:

Before following these steps, make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network.

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  • Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Monitor the printer and try printing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for reply.

I had already updated the firmware on the printer (now running FW version 2020-10-12), and have always run the printer with static IP address.

The behaviour is inconsistent, on sending a print job it will wake up from being in shut-down (i.e. left alone overnight with 4-hour 'shut down' set) perhaps 10% of the time (but always needs a reset if it doesn not print), the rest of the time it does not wake up and even when woken up manually will not print.  Its web server configuration page remains accessible as all times, even when it will not respond to a print job.

I've tried changing the DNS server as per your suggestion, will monitor over coming days and keep you posted...
