Trying to print and asking for a fax number

Hi @GeeGee111

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for flagging this—when your printer asks for a fax number while trying to print, it’s often due to the wrong function being selected or a miscommunication between the app and the printer.

Let’s walk through a few steps to gently steer things back on track:

Confirm the Print Action

Make sure you're selecting Print and not Fax from the list of available devices. Sometimes, the printer’s fax function appears as a separate option (e.g., “HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Fax”) in the print dialog.

  • When printing from an app (like Word or a browser), click File > Print
  • In the Printer dropdown, ensure you select the printer name without “Fax” in it
  • Example: Choose HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 instead of HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Fax

Set the Correct Default Printer

To avoid this happening again, set the correct printer as default:

  1. On your Windows PC, press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter
  2. Right-click your printer (not the fax version) and select Set as default printer

Use the HP App for Printing

If you're printing from the HP App, ensure you're tapping Print Documents or Print Photos, not Fax. The app interface can sometimes default to the last-used function.

You can download or update the HP App from the Microsoft Store or HP’s official site

Remove the Fax Option (Optional)

If the fax option keeps causing confusion, you can remove it:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  2. Right-click the fax version of your printer and choose Remove device

Let me know how it goes after trying these steps. If the issue persists, we can explore deeper settings or app behavior together.
