My HP 8715 gives me a message of "printerhead problems"; missing, not detected or incorrectly installed. I've spent over 2 hours on the AI, support chat and various other HP "help" pages and tried everything described. Unpluging, moving the printerhead, etc. Is the part broken and I need to replace it? I am not too pleased as I have not put a lot of wear and tear on this machine for it to be possibly broken. Has anyone else had this issue and found ways to resolve? Otherwise, I am just going to go to the store and get another brand.

Hi @Choco42,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand your frustration, especially after spending hours trying every suggested fix. The “Printhead problem: missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed” message on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 is unfortunately a known issue that can happen even with light usage. Here’s what we recommend before concluding the part is broken:

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Power Reset

  • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on.

2. Reseat the Printhead

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Lift the latch and carefully remove the printhead.
  • Wipe the electrical contacts gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let dry for 5 minutes.
  • Reinstall the printhead and cartridges, making sure they click firmly.

3. Update Firmware

4. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

(Advanced step – resets printer to factory state)

  • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord.
  • Hold # and 3 while plugging the cord back in.
  • Keep holding until the printer powers on.
  • You’ll need to reconfigure language, region, and Wi-Fi after this.

5. If Error Persists

  • The printhead may be defective.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
