Hi @Mich911,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To address a printhead error on your HP Smart Tank 5105, follow these steps to check and potentially resolve the issue even if the printhead seems inaccessible:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Open the printer cover and check for any visible obstructions that might be blocking the printhead.
  • Remove any paper jams or debris that you find.

Move the Printhead Manually:

  • With the printer turned off and unplugged, try to gently move the printhead assembly manually to the center. This can sometimes dislodge any stuck components.
  • If you feel resistance, stop and do not force it to avoid damaging the printer.

Clean the Printhead:

  • If the printhead is accessible, gently clean it using a lint-free cloth and distilled water or a printhead cleaning solution.
  • Wipe away any ink buildup or debris from the printhead and the surrounding areas.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a factory reset on your printer to clear any errors.
  • Refer to your printer’s manual or the HP website for instructions on how to perform a factory reset for your specific model.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date by visiting the HP website and checking for any available updates.
  • Follow the instructions to update the firmware if necessary.

Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows):

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the HP website. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and scanning problems.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to troubleshoot the printhead error

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
