My HP Pro 8600 is saying there is a problem with the printheads.  How do I know for sure that a replacement print head will work or am I just wasting my money and would be better off to get a new printer? Its about 5-6 years old

Hi @Champ2025,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 showing a printhead issue can be caused by several factors, including clogged nozzles, electrical failures, or outdated firmware. Before investing in a new printhead, try the following steps.

Remove and Reseat the Printhead:

  • Open the printer and remove the ink cartridges.
  • Lift the latch to remove the printhead and check for debris or dried ink.
  • Reseat it properly and reinstall the ink cartridges.

Clean the Printhead:

  • Use the built-in printhead cleaning function from the printer menu.
  • If that doesn’t work, try manually cleaning it:
    • Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and gently wipe the printhead contacts.
    • Let it dry for 10 minutes before reinserting.

Update Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware update from HP’s website.
  • Sometimes, printhead errors are caused by outdated firmware.

Try a Hard Reset:

  • Unplug the printer while it's turned on.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • Restart and check if the error persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
