hi there
Had problems printing from black ink. I assumed the printhead needed cleaning. I have stripped down the print head and cleaned it. I have returned the printhead and connected all the tape connections on the head and replaced the cartridges. When i turn the machine on the printhead slams to the right of the printer and i get a command that the ink cartridge access door is open. when i press the start button the printer switches off. This has happenend a few times now and is stuck in this cycle
i have noticed a lot of black ink under where the cassette sits on the bottom of the printer body. this could be coming out when the cassette hits the printer case
Also , must the removable cover be fully fitted back on before the machine is switched back on ? i have left it off to see if the printhead was catching on something, mabe this is giving me the ink cartridge door open message
Thanks
shaun

There are several issues here:
- There is a thin strip called the encoder strip that is used to keep track of where the printhead is across the page. If this is not properly threaded through the carriage assembly the carriage will slam to one side. See the post here for information on properly attaching the strip. (This is for a different printer, but same general procedure.) If the strip has been damaged the printer wil likely need to be replaced.
- The printhead on the Photosmart 5510 is not designed to be removed. It is likely that one or more of the flat cables are not seated properly.
- It is normal for there to be ink in the service station area. While the ink will look black it is actually a mixture of black and all the colors.
- If you have not put the case back on the lid will likely be detected as open. You may be able to fool the sensor by folding a piece of paper and inserting it in the sensor.
