printed successfully then upon attempted further printing received "printhead missing, not detected or improperly installed" message. cleaned cartridge contacts, removed and reinstalled printhead, disconnected and reconnected power. , all to no avail. Does printhead need to be replaced ?

I understand you are not able to print due to this error.
If you have tried the steps mentioned in this document and the error persists, I'm afraid the printhead has gone bad.
Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer and to check if the printhead is available.
