I’m trying to print invitations on A6 cards but my printer insists on printing them in portrait, making the cover image print across the whole card instead of printing landscape on the actual cover.

I’ve tried rotating the image, and printing it landscape and portrait but despite looking correct on the print preview (landscape mode and the text/image laying the right way), it still prints in portrait, across the page.

I’m printing from the windows photo viewer on windows 10.

The printer supports A6 paper size.

That said, Windows Photo Viewer is perhaps not the best tool for the job in this case.

There are some controls - the results partly depend on the shape and size of the original image file.

The software tends to flip the image to fit the paper and the "fit picture to frame" can chop the edges to mash the photo into the print area.

If you have the Full Feature Software installed for the printer, some of the settings can be adjusted in "Options".

What else?

Is the document actually an image file (.jpg) that contains the content you want to print?

There are a variety of ways to print both documents and images.

For example,

If the file you are trying to print is a PDF file OR an image file of mixed content (picture / text saved as .JPG), then you can try using HP Smart for Windows.

HP Smart for Windows

HP Smart is an application available in the Microsoft Windows Store

OR

HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Windows 10)

NOTE:  Website includes the HP Smart software for Windows and Mobile devices, plus an FAQ section to assist with questions / issues

As with other printing options, the shape and size of the original file impacts the results.

If, for example, your original file is shaped Portrait ( tall and skinny ) but you want to print it in landscape, the results may not be what you expect.

Two examples - Image print Portrait and Landscape

Note: Ignore the borderless option, your Deskjet does not support borderless printing.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the file is an image file (.JPG), then you can print it using  Paint (mspaint) .

Paint gives you control over the orientation, centering, and print size, too.

The shape of the original image (whether it is tall and narrow or wider-than-tall) impacts how the image fits on the paper.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the file is a PDF file, you can print it using Adobe Reader DC

The software allows  you to select Page Size and orientation.

The margins can be a bit tricky - for example, if the content is too close to the edge, you might have to use "fit" instead of "Actual" size (100%).

Hello! Thanks for the quick reply!

I realize now I had been using HP Smart for Windows - not windows photo viewer in my first attempts.

My image is a .jpeg and it is in landscape mode (wide and short).

I have tired opening it in the Paint program and printing from there, but I am having the exact same results - printing portrait.

My image is landscape, the image displays landscape in both HP Smart and Paint, and the print previews display landscape correctly... yet it prints portrait/vertically...

Any other suggestions...?

Thanks!
Kim

You are welcome.

There is only so much you can do, of course.

Hopefully, the problem is simply a missed setting.

HP Smart for Windows is an application - fairly smart but not "all encompassing".

If you have not done so, install the Full Feature Software for the printer.

Printer software provides a foundation on which other programs and applications might depend.

Load the paper into the printer - Page 12

 User Guide

Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS

Adjust the settings in Tray and Paper Management

General Example

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

Click Apply to save changes

Open HP Smart for Windows

Select the file type to print (photo)

Select the file to print

Once you have selected your item to print, the main print menu provides options to set / adjust the print.

For the most control (and with it, opportunities for errors), switch ON "Let the app change my printing preferences"

Adjust the settings on the main print menu

"More Settings" provides shortcuts (along the top) - select one that matches (or is close to) the type of job.

Adjust the rest of the "More Settings" > Click OK to save the setup and leave the menu

When ready, Click Print on the main print menu
