I configure the printer to double-sided printing. If the document contains only one page, the top margin will be printed at 2.5 cm as set in the setup. As soon as the document contains two pages or more, the top margin alters to 3.2 cm on the printed odd pages and toggles back to 2.5 cm on the even pages.
In word, all pages are set up to be with standard margins top, bottom, left and right and all pages are set to not change between even and odd pages.
I would be happy for any suggestion how I can print odd and even pages with identical margins top, bottom, left and right.

Hi @DrHJK,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer where the top margin changes inconsistently between odd and even pages when printing double-sided. This can sometimes be caused by settings in the printer driver or the document itself.
Here are a few steps you can try to ensure consistent margins on both odd and even pages.
Check Printer Settings:
- Open the printer properties or settings on your computer.
- Ensure that the duplex (double-sided) printing option is correctly set. Sometimes, printers have options like "Flip on Long Edge" or "Flip on Short Edge". Make sure the setting matches your document layout.
- Verify that any margin settings in the printer properties are consistent and match your document's margins.
Document Settings:
- In your Word document, go to the Layout or Page Setup settings.
- Check that the margins are uniform for all pages. You mentioned they are set to standard margins, but double-check this for consistency.
- Ensure that there are no specific settings for odd and even pages that might override your uniform margin settings.
Print Preview:
- Before printing, use the print preview feature in Word or your document editor to check how the pages will be printed.
- Ensure that the margins look consistent for both odd and even pages in the print preview.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Sometimes, outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause printing issues. Ensure you have the latest drivers installed for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer. You can download them from HP's official support website.
Reset Printer Preferences:
- If the issue persists, try resetting the printer preferences to default settings. This can sometimes resolve settings conflicts.
Print as PDF and Reprint:
- As a workaround, you can try printing your document as a PDF file and then printing the PDF. Sometimes, this bypasses formatting issues that occur when printing directly from a document editor.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4 and thank you for this prompt and helpful set of hints. Let me tell you what I found in the meantime. All settings are as I wrote initially, and I double-checked that nothing changed by whatsoever reason. I tried printing as a PDF already before I read your note, but this does exactly the same as if I was printing as a word-document. Then I performed a factory reset to reload the default values and started the printer new. I deinstalled the drivers and reinstalled the latest version downloaded from the HP-website. All that did not at all change anything. Then I tried to print the word-document as well as the pdf-file on my spare-printer, an HP ENVY 7640 and believe it or not this printer printed both sides exactly in the way as you would expect it to do. So, my conclusion of this issue is, that either the print-driver of the 7740 or the printer itself has a bug.
I have earned a PhD in electronics and civil engineering and hence I know to try to resolve things after a thorough and systematic research to get to the root-cause. So, I think I have identified the root-cause, but now I need the help of you guys as I suspect that I have a bug either in the printer hard- or firmware or maybe just in the driver for Windows 11 64bit.
So thank you so far and any further assistance to resolve the persistent problem is highly appreciated.
I do wish you a great day and hope to talk again soon. Regards Hans from Germany

Hi @DrHJK,
Thank you for your response,
It sounds like you've done quite a thorough investigation to isolate the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer. Given that printing works as expected on your spare printer (HP ENVY 7640), it does suggest that the issue lies specifically with the OfficeJet Pro 7740, possibly with its drivers or firmware.
Here are a few more steps you can take to further troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue.
- Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 has the latest firmware installed. Firmware updates can fix bugs and improve printer performance. You can usually check for updates directly from the printer's control panel or through HP's support website.
- Update Printer Drivers: Even though you've already reinstalled the drivers, double-check if there are any newer versions available on HP's official website. Sometimes, automatic driver updates might miss the latest version.
- Driver Compatibility: Verify that the driver you downloaded is specifically for Windows 11 64-bit. Sometimes, using a driver that isn't fully compatible with your operating system can cause unexpected issues.
- Printer Diagnostics: HP printers often have built-in diagnostic tools accessible through the control panel or HP's printer software. Running a diagnostic test might provide more insights into what could be causing the duplex printing problem.
Given your background in electronics and engineering, you've approached this methodically, which is excellent. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, certain printer issues can be tricky to resolve
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,
I am deeply impressed by your speedy and helpful responses. I did check the firmware actuality before I wrote to you, and it was actual already. The GUI displays "EDWINXPP1N002.2415C.00" dated 2024-04-11. I did reload the driver set directly from the HP-Web-Site today before reinstalling, assuming that this is the latest and most current version available. The file is labelled "Full_Webpack-40.16.1234_1-OJ7740_Full_Webpack.exe". Unfortunately, I don't find any diagnostics app neither in the control panel of the printer itself, nor in the GUI.
Is there anything else we could check or do to resolve the issue?
Thanks for your help and have a good day. Best regards Hans
