When i try to print an envelope from Word, i get the message that the Paper is too short to Auto Duplex, even though I opt for printing on one side only.

There are a lot of things that could be going on; I will give you some ideas of where to look.

Understand that the following is somewhat general in nature.  I have not seen nor used this model for a long time; your printer and your printer software may behave in ways other than those described.

This printer, as I remember, does not support custom sizes.  This means you can print envelopes that are supported by the printer as noted in the Specifications > Paper Handling > Envelopes

The setup (using Word) is pretty straight forward.

Word > New document > Mailings > Envelopes

Example - Chickens and Rabbits #10 envelope

Rabbits_and_Chickens_Test_Envelope_10_1Rabbits_and_Chickens_Test_Envelope_10_1

The printer settings will default to the Printing Preferences - if your printing preferences "preferred" shortcut includes duplex, you will see this option when you try to print.  Open the Printing Properties (after you click Print in Word and as you are submitting the print job), adjust the settings for the current job, then print.

For example, if your printing preferences does not have an "Envelope" shortcut and / or you cannot create one, select a shortcut that is single sided - perhaps "Everyday Printing".  The actual envelope size will be handled in the Word envelope setup.

Many thanks. I am still struggling with this. In Word, i select Mailings,Envelopes,Options, Envelope size DL (110 x 220 mm) then printing options. Feed from the Main Tray, insert envelopes as directed, ok and print. I still get the message "paper too short to auto duplex". This occurs even if I opt for "print on one side only" before starting. Any further thoughts?

You are welcome.

I would guess that "somewhere" there is a setting for duplex that is interfering.

Or

Perhaps your Printing Preferences are set to a shortcut that includes settings that are not compatible with printing envelopes.

Set the Preferences

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences >

Tab Printing Shortcuts > Click / Highlight preferred shortcut > Click Apply > Click OK to exit

If the printer software supports the feature, change the settings as desired, then use “Save as” to create a Custom Shortcut.

OR

Windows key + S (search for) Printers and Scanners

Left-Click on (your) Printer > Manage >

Printing Preferences

Select a shortcut and / or set “preferred settings” for paper, source (tray), other settings

Optional (if / as available): Save As > enter a name for your custom shortcut

Click OK to save the preferences

Check / Adjust the Paper at the Printer Panel

Open Printer Tray, add desired paper type

Close Tray

IF Applicable on your printer:

On the printer control panel, Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down list, Select Custom

If your Printing Preferences do not provide an "Envelope" shortcut,

The "too short" / "wrong size" / "orientation" issue might be a result of your Printing Preferences having been set to other than a "plain paper", "one sided" print shortcut.

General Example (It is expected that the sample will be similar but not the same as seen for your Photosmart printer)

Everyday_Print_8740_Preferences_1Everyday_Print_8740_Preferences_1

The User Guide (Page 15) explains how envelopes are loaded:

Lower the photo tray.Load envelopesa.Raise the photo tray.

Slide paper-width guide outwards.

Remove all paper from the main input tray.b.Load envelopes.

Insert one or more envelopes into far-right side of main input tray, with envelope flaps on left andfacing up.

Slide stack of envelopes forward until it stops.

Slide paper-width guide inward against stack of envelopes until it stops.

Lower the photo tray

The examples provided have been tested in a limited environment.

At this writing:

  • Windows 10 Pro V1809
  • Microsoft Office Home and Business 2019
  • HP Officejet Pro 8740

Sorry for the vague terms.  I do not know the cause of the results you are seeing.
