Printer keeps getting stuck in spooling, does anyone have any ideas on what to do?  I have emptied my printer spooler, restarted my entire system, reinstalled my printer.

Hi @momratz87

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for already taking the time to clear the print spooler, restart your system, and reinstall the printer—that’s a great start and truly appreciated. I understand how frustrating it must be to see your print jobs stuck in the spooling stage despite those efforts.

Let’s walk through a few more steps that can help clear this up and get your printer humming again.

Step 1: Use the HP App’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

  1. Open the HP App on your Windows computer.
  2. Go to the printer’s home screen within the app.
  3. Select “Printer Settings” or “Advanced Settings.”
  4. Choose “Diagnose & Fix” and let it run a full check. It will automatically detect and resolve common spooling or communication issues.

Step 2: Restart the Print Spooler Service

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down and find “Print Spooler.”
  3. Right-click it and select “Stop.”
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files inside this folder.
  5. Go back to the Services window, right-click “Print Spooler” again, and select “Start.”

Step 3: Set the Printer as Default

  1. Open the Windows “Settings” app.
  2. Go to “Bluetooth & devices” > “Printers & scanners.”
  3. Select your printer, then click “Set as default.”

Step 4: Check for Print Driver Conflicts

  1. In “Printers & scanners,” remove any duplicate or greyed-out instances of your printer.
  2. Reinstall the printer using the HP App if needed, ensuring only one active instance remains.

Step 5: Print Directly to the Printer

  1. Open “Control Panel” > “Devices and Printers.”
  2. Right-click your printer and select “Printer properties.”
  3. Go to the “Advanced” tab.
  4. Check the box for “Print directly to the printer.”
  5. Click “Apply” and “OK.”

Once these steps are complete, try printing a test page from the HP App or a simple document. Let’s see if the spooling issue clears up with this fresh approach.
