I have a file including both legal and letter size documents and want to print the complete file without stopping at each change in paper size, note, the legal and letter are mixed throughout the file. Printer has 2 paper trays.  How do I set this up?

Hi,

Insert the legal size paper into the top tray, close the tray and be sure to click on Modify and select teh proper paper size for that tray.

Insert the Letter size into the bottom tray, also be sure to change the paper size to meet the actual size in the tray by following the settings on the printer screen.

Print the file from your PC, be sure to access the Printing Preferences dialog b pressing Settings / Properties and be sure to set the Paper Source as Automatic, then the printer should use the proper size paper per the trays configuration.

Shlomi

Thank you very much for your help. It still does not work. The properties does not recognize tray 2...only options are tray 1 or auto...and auto is not getting it done. Thoughts?

Hi @attyxpress,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I see from the post that you are having issues printing on your HP OfficeJet 7740 printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any changes on the printer before the issue started?

Have you tried to remove the 2nd paper try and reinstalled it?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to remove the 2nd paper tray and then try to install it and check if that helps.

For more assistance, please follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Printers - Print Driver Settings Guide (Windows)

I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes for further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help.

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,

It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.

Thank you very much for replying and your suggestions.  I believe I followed the steps correctly...reinstalled the software for the printer (officejet pro 7740).  My computer now recognizes a 2nd tray in the print screen properties, which it did not do previously (I am not sure if this is reinstallling the second tray or was something else).  However, the printer still will not print from alternating trays.

This is a new printer that I purchased 1 week ago today...so there have been no changes to it and I have not been able to print alternating letter/legal docs previously.

The goal is to print a docuement, with alternating letter & legal paper, by hitting print and having the box "Choose paper source by PDF page size" checked.

Currently legal is in tray 1 and letter paper is in tray 2.

It will be a HUGE help if you can assist with getting it working as I have meetings this week that require me to print the documents in this manner.  If I can not get it to work I will have to return the printer and find something else (which I would prefer not to have to do).  Thoughts??

Thank you again in advance!

Hi @attyxpress,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

After reviewing your post, I see that there is no such option which will automatically feed in the paper. I would suggest you would have to manually select the tray.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you need any further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help.
